Cranberries Pack Prostate Health Benefits
Prostate health is becoming increasingly important to men, particularly as they age. It's important to monitor prostate health at all stages of life and live a health lifestyle that helps support prostate health.1-2
- The youngest members of the Baby Boomer generation are approaching their 50's.
By the year 2030, there will be approximately 61 million U.S. Baby Boomers that are between the ages of 66 to 84. Additionally, 9 million American men will be 85 years old or older.1-2 - As you can imagine, this aging population is creating a huge market opportunity for nutraceutical companies to manufacture beneficial supplements that promote prostate health.
More Men Are Taking an Active Interest in Purchasing Health Products
The good news is that more men are taking an active interest in managing their health issues and buying supplements for themselves. According to industry experts, more men are becoming aware of the role herbs and bioactives play in addressing certain health concerns.4 A recent survey conducted by Planters, a leading snack nut brand, shows that more men are shopping for groceries (88 percent) and want to make healthy food choices.5
Ingredients That Support Prostate Health
Selenium, saw palmetto and lycopene have strong scientific support for promoting prostate health.6 While these three nutrients have generated interest among consumers, a recent study reveals that cranberries, which already are known to support urinary tract health in women, might be even more effective in supporting prostate health and promoting urinary functions in men than previously thought.
Cranberries
A 500 mg daily dose of PACran, a whole-berry product standardized for proanthocyanidins from Decas Botanical Synergies was reported to have significant benefits for men's urinary tract health. Right now, PACran boasts of being the only cranberry to have been tested with positive benefits for promoting prostate health. The study published in the British Journal noted that PACran marked a 50 percent boost in a quality of life score.7
According to the marketing director of Decas Botanical Synergies, "40 percent of men in their 50's and 90 percent of men in their 80's are susceptible to Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)."
Saw Palmetto
According to SPINS, a market research company based in Schaumburg, Ill., saw palmetto generated nearly $19 million in sales, making it the second most purchased herbal dietary supplement in 2010. Few dietary ingredients have received as much attention in the men's health category as has saw palmetto and its active ingredient, beta-sitosterol.8
Saw palmetto (serona repens) is obtained from the partially dried berries of the dwarf palm tree. There are several studies that support the use of saw palmetto to support healthy urinary flow.9
Lycopene
Lycopene is a bioactive component of tomatoes. In a randomized clinical pilot study, 40 men with prostate concerns, were given 15 mg. of lycopene each day for 6 months while the control group was given a placebo. At the end of the study, scientists concluded that lycopene supplements may help support prostate health. Scientists found lycopene to be safe to use and well-tolerated.10
Selenium
A study published in the May 2009 issue of Acta Oncologica examined the connection between blood selenium and prostate health in 21 men. Researchers observed that men with higher levels of selenium in the blood had better prostate health in the future than men who had lower levels of selenium in the blood. The July 2011 issue of Urologia published a review noting selenium's ability to reduce oxidation in the prostate. Selenium can help protect the prostate against the damaging effects of free radical activity.11-12
