Skincare Supplements: Nutraceuticals for UV Protection

Supplements for skincare have long held the interest of international customers, prompting dietary supplement brands to expand their product range to address various skin health and aging-related issues, and one of the categories with exponentially growing interest is supplements that can help protect from UV damage and premature aging (or photoaging) of the skin from exposure to natural or artificial sources of UV light.

A few of the numerous signs of UV damage include wrinkles, leathery skin, age spots, and scaly skin patches. But Gene Bruno, MS, MHS, RH(AHG), a 44-year nutraceutical industry veteran and Vice President of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs for NutraScience Labs, says the following nutraceuticals have the potential to help protect skin from UV rays and mitigate some of the adverse effects of UV exposure.

Niacinamide

A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide has an evidence-backed photoprotective effect on the skin, and studies have shown regular niacinamide supplementation can reduce rough, scaly skin patches and reduce immune suppression caused by long-term UV exposure.

Grape Seed Extract

Grape seed extract is rich in the powerful antioxidant proanthocyanidin and has a clinically demonstrated effect of reducing hyperpigmentation of skin and preventing it from getting worse.

Red-Orange Complex

Effective against age spots, the most visible sign of photoaging, the red-orange complex has photoprotective and anti-aging effects that can help reduce UV-induced age spots and redness. Additionally, studies have also found that regular red-orange complex supplementation can also help improve skin's antioxidant properties, reaction to UV exposure, moisturization, and elasticity while decreasing the intensity of pigmentation, trans-dermal water loss, and wrinkle depth.

Beta-carotene

Beta-carotene is a UV protector that can help improve facial wrinkles and elasticity, increase pro-collagen gene activity, and reduce UV-induced DNA damage to the skin even with lower doses, making it an excellent choice for preventing and repairing photoaging.

Omega-3 Fatty Acid EPA

Studies have shown that regular intake of high doses of omega-3 fatty acid EPA can decrease photoaging of the skin.

Pomegranate Extract

Rich in powerful antioxidant ellagic acid, pomegranate extract supplements have a demonstrated tendency to reduce stains and freckles and have an inhibitory effect on skin pigmentation in human skin.
