Bone Broth Protein Powders – Recognizing the Basics?

Last updated: January-25,2021

Bone Broth Protein Powders- Get Your Basics Right!

Bone broths are nothing new. If we're being technical about things, humans have incorporated animal and livestock bones into cooking (and by extension nutrition) for thousands of years. On the other hand, bone broth protein powders are a bit more recent – and by recent I mean that up until about six months ago hardly anyone was talking about them.

What are bone broth protein powders?

Arguably, they're exactly what they sound like. More often than not, a bone broth protein powder is a protein powder that features a dehydrated chicken or beef bone stock as its primary ingredient.

Chicken or Beef? At the moment, the majority of bone broth protein supplements and products are made using chicken or beef bones. While they certainly aren't vegan/vegetarian-friendly, a number of the bone broth protein powders on the market have been recognized for having the potential to be the "paleo-friendly," "gut-friendly," gluten-free, dairy-free, low-sugar protein powders of tomorrow.

The Bone Broth Protein Trend

Even though it's impossible to slap a hard numerical gauge on popularity, it is possible to get a good idea of how relatively popular a person, place, or thing maybe with help of our friends over at Google! In the case of bone broth protein powders, the trend reports point to some interesting data.

What are we looking at here? This particular window captures the interest of US users in the phrase "bone broth protein" over the course of the last year. As you might have noticed, interest was at a relative flatline up until May of 2016 – at which point interest skyrockets, ultimately soaring to its all-time high by mid-July 2016.

Bone Broth Protein Benefits

When it comes to the benefits of bone broth protein powders, things get interesting. From a nutritional standpoint, many of the  powders available on the market today claim to offer consumers an impressive panel of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients along with a high-quality dose of protein.

Even though there are hundreds (if not thousands) of consumer stories and anecdotes supporting the suggestion that some of the key nutrients found in bone broth protein powders (like collagen/gelatin, glycine, and proline) can support numerous aspects of full body health the scientific evidence currently available is a tad on the thin side.

Even though there are plenty of personal stories supporting the benefits of bone broth supplements, the scientific jury is still out.

The catch is that though there may be plenty of studies available focusing on the effects of each of the key nutrients found in bone broth protein powders, there's not nearly as much research available concerning the effects and benefits of bone broth protein powders as a whole.

What does the future hold for bone broth protein powders?

Even though there's still plenty of room for new clinical and scientific research, the future of bone broth protein powders looks bright. We're looking forward to seeing what 2017 has in store for this up and coming protein!
